Abstract

This article investigates the complex relationship between international trade and investment agreements and their influence on food environment policymaking. It examines how these agreements shape national and local policies related to food production, distribution, and consumption, impacting public health and sustainability. The study highlights the mechanisms through which trade and investment frameworks affect regulatory decisions, particularly concerning food safety, nutrition, and agricultural practices. By analyzing case studies from various countries, the research identifies both positive and negative outcomes of these agreements on food policy, such as the promotion of healthy food environments versus the risk of undermining local agricultural practices. Additionally, the article discusses the implications of this interface for policymakers, emphasizing the need for a cohesive approach that aligns international obligations with domestic health goals. Ultimately, the findings advocate for greater awareness and integration of trade and investment considerations in the formulation of food environment policies to ensure a balanced and sustainable food system.
